The only times I witnessed Best in the flesh were in his Hibernian days of 1980, at the twilight of his career when he blatantly couldn't give a damn. Hibs sacked him briefly after he absconded for a week long piss up with the French rugby team who had been playing at Murrayfield. Renowned for his sharp wit and good looks, Best is fondly remembered for one liners like "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars..... the rest I just squandered." A life on the alcohol eventually claimed this genius at the relatively young age of 59. What a player!
