“I wanted to defy time,” according to Dylan. “When you look at a painting, you can see any part of it altogether. I wanted that song to be like a painting.” For me and many others, "Tangled up in Blue" sits at the top of his astounding catalogue. Its use of time, jumping from past to present to future and back inside 6 minutes throughout the narrative, as he thinks on a woman in his life. Like Picasso pushing through on perspective, Dylan achieves this in his "Cubist" song brilliantly, "pourin' off of every page like it was written in my soul from me to you, tangled up in blue"
